Solist Profile: Stone Tung

Stone Tung was born in Hong Kong and has started learning trumpet at the age of 6, alongside piano and voice. A graduate of the Chetham’s School of Music, he is now studying at the Royal College of Music, London, with Mark Calder, James Fountain and Kate Moore on a full scholarship supported by the Croucher Hong Kong Charitable Trust. He has participated in masterclasses with Gustav Melander, Paul Archibald and Henning Kraggerud.

Former Principal Trumpet of the Hong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra, Stone performed as a soloist with the orchestra in Thailand, celebrating the establishment of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Bangkok. He has worked with world-renowned musicians such as Sir Antonio Pappano, Mike Lovatt, Kevin John Edusei, Charles Castleman, Ben Palmer, Franz Krager, Natalia Luis-Bassa, Paul Mann, Yip Wing-Sie and Lio Kuokman amongst others.

Making his debut with the Gustav Mahler Orchestra in July 2022, Stone started his studying conducting with Dr Jerome Hoberman and also counts Franz Krager and Colin Touchin as his mentors. He has conducted the Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra, Royal College of Music Brass Ensemble, St Stephen’s College Symphony Orchestra, and the Clausura Chamber Orchestra which he founded in 2020. He has also been invited to assist Wilson Ng. He has participated in a masterclass with Jac Van Steen, Mark Heron, Ben Gernon, Kenneth Woods and Jonathan Mann.
